Haraki to Kalathos

Haraki beach

A 5.5 mile walk along the Rhodes coast from Haraki to Kalathos

Although short, this is a good afternoons walk along the beach around the bay between the two villages of Haraki and Kalathos. Once out of Haraki the beach becomes deserted of people with the barren land dotted with olive trees on one side and the deep blue sea on the other. The beach is shingle and can become heavy going but for some of the distance there is a dirt track just beyond the beach which makes for easier walking. Take it easy, with stops to dip ones feet in the sea and this makes a relaxing introduction to Rhodes walking.

Haraki and Feraklos Castle

Feraklos Castle

A climb from Haraki beach to Feraklos Castle

Feraklos castle stands guard above the village of Haraki. The castle is in ruins but is extensive in size. It is a rough scramble to get into the castle walls but worth the effort in order to admire this site which is the size of a small village. There is an information board in Heraki that details the history and archaeology of the area.

Archangelos to Haraki, the easy route

view towards agathi beach

A fairly easy walk to navigate even without a navigation app to give a flavour of rural Rhodes

Using well defined tracks and roads this walk allows even the causal explorer to see something of the wilder side of rural Rhodes. The route follows the coastline and being at some 150m provides great coastal views. The end of this walk is at Masari village, or alternatively one can terminate the walk at Haraki, reducing the distance by 3km.

Walk to Masari Mountain Chapel

The mountain with the chapel on it

A walk to the chapel on the summit of the mountain to the immediate north east of Masari

This is not a clamber up the sides of a scrub and rocky mountain, but follows a track that curves around the mountain which looms behind Masari village. At the summit is a small chapel where a deserved rest can be taken before returning along the same route. Do not be taken in that this is easy. With little in the way of shade, this is a tough climb in the heat. Take plenty of water and do not attempt in the heat of summer.

Walk to the Malona Waterfall

Malona Waterfall

A 7 mile walk from Malona through the river valley to a waterfall

Although this waterfall is dry for many months of the year, the expedition is worth the effort to witness the calcification of the surrounding rocks and trees. This walk also passes the monastery of Moni Eleomonitria and provides some amazing scenery through the river valley
