Akramítis Mountain - the Easy Route

This is probably the less demanding route to scale Mount Akramítis. The hike offers panoramic views, varying terrains, and historical sites. The return trip can take around 5 hours to cover approximately 8 km, allowing for time to admire the sites and rest.

Kymissala Tower is a medieval fortification constructed by the Knights of St John. This impressive well preserved tower is in a small remote bay only accessible on foot. Moni Ipseni is a working female monastery in the hills above Lardos. This really is a journey into another world and something well worth the pilgrimage. The return is along tracks through the forest which then leads down to Glystra beach. A very rewarding walk.

Siana (Σιάνα) has a lot to offer the visitor including the magnificent church of Saint Panteleimonas (Αγίου Παντελεήμονα) and a museum in the former church building. This walk provides a rural route that connects Monolithos to Siana to provide a full days walking and sightseeing.

Easy Walk from Kiotari to Asklipio

A 5.5 mile walk up into the hills behind Kiotari to the village of Asklipio

A scenic walk meanders up into the hills behind Kiotari to the sleepy little village of Asklipio with its folklore museum, enchanting church full of medieval frescos and above it all, the castle. There is a broad track throughout and navigation is easy. Return is by the road but this has some equally spectacular views that would be missed in the fleeting glimpses from a car.

Although this waterfall is dry for many months of the year, the expedition is worth the effort to witness the calcification of the surrounding rocks and trees. This walk also passes the monastery of Moni Eleomonitria and provides some amazing scenery through the river valley

This walk leads in to the wild yonder to make a circular route between the Holy Cross church and Moni Ipseni. The starting point is in the hills but this specific route is detailed from the nearest transport hub at the village of Lardos. This is a beautiful wander through the hills, exploring the natural history of the island.

Archangelos to Haraki, the easy route

A fairly easy walk to navigate even without a navigation app to give a flavour of rural Rhodes

Using well defined tracks and roads this walk allows even the causal explorer to see something of the wilder side of rural Rhodes. The route follows the coastline and being at some 150m provides great coastal views. The end of this walk is at Masari village, or alternatively one can terminate the walk at Haraki, reducing the distance by 3km.

There are waterfalls in the hills above the village of Lardos during rainy period. Although there is no documented route to find these this walk leads the way to such potential areas. There are some challenges in completing the route but nothing an experienced hiker should be incapable of. It has to be said that during times of rainfall navigating the full route may not be possible.

Walk to Masari Mountain Chapel

A walk to the chapel on the summit of the mountain to the immediate north east of Masari

This is not a clamber up the sides of a scrub and rocky mountain, but follows a track that curves around the mountain which looms behind Masari village. At the summit is a small chapel where a deserved rest can be taken before returning along the same route. Do not be taken in that this is easy. With little in the way of shade, this is a tough climb in the heat. Take plenty of water and do not attempt in the heat of summer.

This walk is an exploration around the peninsular that forms the backdrop to what is commonly known as Navarone Bay, or to give its correct name St Nicholas' Bay. The area is being developed and no doubt tracks and trails may change in subsequent years, making accessibility easier. For now, in 2019, it is still pretty wild and a treat to explore.

Archangelos to Haraki Coast Walk

A 7.5 mile walk along the Rhodes coast from Archangelos to Haraki

A walk of discovery along the rocky coastline to Haraki. The spectacular views along this section can only be discovered by either walking or from a boat and include the magnificent rock arch that juts out into the sea. A large section of this route needs to be navigated by following cairns and red and blue markers that are painted in the rocks.

Lindos Mountain Trail

A walk through the mountains that form the backdrop to Lindos

Although this trail is more challenging than many of the walks on this website, the reward is the amazing views. From the highest point of the path, broad vistas can be seen taking in the whole of Navarone Bay from Pefkos to Lindos. The trail then leads through the valley between the Marmari and Zara mountains where the boulders are larger than the trees. The route leads down to the beach before returning to Lindos taking in a cliff chapel along the way, set in a cave in the hills above Vlicha Beach.

Kalathos to Lardos via the Mycenaean Cemetery

A walk from Kalathos to discover the Mycenaean Cemetery

This walk goes in search of the Mycenaean Cemetery that is located to the north of the village of Pylona. Six tombs were discovered in this area during construction and cultivation of the slopes of the hills above the village. The tombs are over 3000 years old and although all artefacts have been removed to a Archaeology Museum in Rhodes, it is worth the effort to connect back with some ancient history of the island, when the Mycenaean culture thrived. Even today traditions and customs can be dated back to such prehistoric times.

Expedition to Lardos Castle

A walk to discover the ruined remains of Lardos Castle

It would appear that few folk know that Lardos once had a Castle, let alone know of its location. This walk sets out to offer a route to discover this piece of history which is said to date from Byzantine times of the 12th century or even earlier. Little remains of the castle, but the substantial wall with a ruined square tower at its eastern end is an impressive sight that makes the walk a well worth expedition.
